I’ve been asked this question quite a bit, what is a reading motivator? I simply tell people a reading motivator, is a person who is dedicated to promoting interest in or enthusiasm for reading. The next question is usually, you’ve guessed it, how do you go about doing that? Well I tell them I do this in different ways but, I am going to highlight three important ways I help children and adults to want to read. First, is through having engaging read alouds. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read a book to a crowd of people whether at a school, library, Farmer’s market or on our youtube channel and, the kids as well as the adults say they felt like they were in the book or, you make the book come to life. Then afterwards they are talking about the book or repeating some of the lines in the book which in turn is getting them enthused about reading. Second, the majority of the books that I read have characters that represent Black families and their culture. This is very important because having Black characters “impacts a child’s motivation for reading”(AP News November 4, 2018) The third way I encourage children to read is by asking them, what are their interests then, I suggest to them books that talk about the very thing they’re interested in. This is very impactful, because the kids actually are empowered when choosing the book they want to read. This in turns helps to motivate them to want to read or read more.

Hi my name is Sasha Beckette-Abdullah and I am reading tutor/reading motivator. I tutor children from pre-k to fourth grade. I have been a reading tutor for 13 years. I added the title reading motivator in 2016 because, when I read aloud to children this is what has been told to me constantly by the children and the adults is that I make them want to read.
