When you know you need a reading tutor
Hi my name is Sasha Beckette-Abdullah and I have been a reading tutor for pre-K-4th grade for 17 years. My journey into becoming a full time reading tutor started, when I was asked to help my niece with her reading back in 2007. Then, over the years through homeschooling and having a pre-k center in my home, I’d continued with my focus on making sure my students developed a stong reading foundation. Finally, I decided in 2013 to put my energy into solely helping children who struggled with reading. One of the main reasons why I decided to become a reading tutor is because I get to be a part of the solution when it comes to our Black children who suffer with low levels of literacy and low reading proficiency. It hurts me when I see children that come from my community who get frustrated, and want to give up on reading altogether because they lack the foundational skills that are needed to become a successful reader. Again we can complain about the problem, however we must make a decision on how we are going to help solve the problem, and this is what I’m doing, helping our children to develop a strong reading foundation, so they can begin to see themselves as extraordinary readers.
